Sunir J. Garg, MD, considers the breadth of medical care supporting the treatment of diabetes, setting the management of diabetic macular edema within the array of involved organ systems that, together, present a substantial challenge for patients seeking effective therapies.
Multiple components figure into this challenge, ranging from general economic factors to barriers that affect specific communities. A fundamental problem, Dr Garg asserts, is the organizing of clinical studies, which currently disproportionately enlist White patients and so necessarily produce less than optimal results, which in turn affects proper eye care for all patients with this disorder.
